Hi everyone! I hope that all is well at home. From the feedback that I have gotten from students, it seems that Japan’s condition is quite stable, and for that I am very happy. As long as people continue to cooperate with health guidelines, there is no reason for an uncontrollable spread of disease. It is during these times that I really envy the discipline and initiative of people in other places. Here in the Philippines, on the other hand, the entire country is suffering. Instead of cooperating and ensuring the safety of everyone, people tend to be selfish and prideful. There were several riots and protests at first. I honestly did not want to know more, and I have done my best to keep my head out of the news since then. Filipinos are known to be happy and hospitable, yet we seem unable to care for one another in this time of need. It’s very disappointing.
I imagine everyone is feeling very claustrophobic now, with the quarantine in full effect. The government says it is doing its best to support the people, but only the poor are receiving help. Due to living conditions, I think they are most at risk of contracting and spreading the disease. I hope that the government is at least monitoring their movements and health as they distribute food and money to those in need. In contrast, middle class families like ours are left on our own. We do not receive rice, goods, or money despite the fact that we pay large taxes for every purchase and every income. Our bills are being delayed as a favor but they still exist without a discount, so our debt still increases with each month if we do not pay them in time. It’s a sad balance of existence. While we have supported the government with our taxes all these years, we are getting no share of the help our taxes have purchased.
I wonder how much longer the virus will remain. As a veterinarian, I know that viruses can be very strong and can persist on fomites, getting ready to spread to individuals who are being careless. Sometimes, it is crazy to think of how extreme this situation has become. I know that the virus was kept a secret at first, but once word had gotten out, I think the entire world was already aware of the situation in China. I am always late to hearing news myself, but I had heard of it since late December. I wonder why everyone refused to close their borders at that time. Imagine a world where everyone had done the sensible thing and banned entry from one country temporarily. Instead, we are now shut in our houses and borders are placed even within towns. We could have saved ourselves the suffering.
With that said, I cannot express how grateful I am to be part of Englishbuds. I’m not as sociable as I wish to be, but I am passionate about the things that I set my mind to. It’s amazing how much I am learning from my new friends on this platform, and I am really enjoying the experience and the opportunity to help people improve their skills in English speaking and writing. While I work safely from home, I can still fully support all of my pets and take care of my family, too. I never thought this would be possible. Again, I would like to thank everyone for their patience and kindness. I will continue to do my best to improve as a teacher and provide helpful lessons
