Being in a tropical country that gets really hot in summer, we, Filipinos have come up with different kinds of refreshments to help beat the summer heat. The awesome thing about these Filipino refreshments is that they are affordable, accessible and DELICIOUS!

Since it is now summer season in Japan, I would be sharing how you can make HALO-HALO at home, the ultimate summertime treat for most Filipinos. The word “HALO-HALO” literally means “mixed”. It is a layered dessert consisting of shaved ice, evaporated milk, ice cream and different mix-ins, like sweetened banana, jackfruit, sweet red and white beans, gelatin, rice crispies, nata de coco, corn kernel, and more. You can also just use canned fruits that we can easily get from the the supermarkets if these ingredients are not available.

INGREDIENTS:
• sweet red beans
• sweet white beans
• coconut gel (nata de coco)
• macapuno (gelatinous coconut strings or coconut sport)
• corn kernel
• sweetened banana
• sweetened jackfruit
• rice crispies
• shaved ice
• evaporated milk
• leche flan or pudding
• purpleyam ice cream / vanilla ice cream
* Please remember that if these ingredients are not available, you can use canned fruits.

HOW TO MAKE HALO-HALO:
1. Layer the sweetened fruits, sweet red beans, sweet white beans, gelatin, jackfruit, macapuno (coconut sport), nata de coco, corn kernel and sugar in a tall glass.
2. Add shaved ice.

3. Drizzle with evaporated milk. (I personally love to put much milk in my halo-halo.)
4. Top with leche flan or pudding, rice crispies and ice cream (purple yam or vanilla flavor).
5. Mix all the ingredients together and enjoy immediately.

For many of Filipinos, HALO-HALO is a kind of treat that is hard to tire of. And I am sure that you will love it, too… It is somewhat similar to Japan’s “KAKIGORI”, so kids will surely enjoy it.
I hope that you enjoyed reading this entry, Mommies and Daddies… And I do hope that you can try and enjoy making HALO-HALO with your little ones at home… Thank you so very much, Mommies and Daddies… Thank you very, very, Mommy Kayo… Let us all stay safe and healthy.

う~~~ん、おいしそうですね♪
