【講師コラム】エセル講師No. ～My English journey～

Foreigners often asked why Filipinos speak English so well. The majority of my fellowmen would agree that America has greatly influenced the Philippines in many ways. From food, sports, fashion, music, etc.

But the strong impact is on the Philippines’ education system. On this note, whether students like English subjects or not, it is compulsory to learn them. Books or reference materials are mostly in English except for Filipino books. Teachers facilitated the lessons in the English language in all my learning years in school.

In my primary education, the teachers would assign ten vocabulary words each day. I had to memorize the spelling, meaning, and how to use them in sentences. We had spelling bees or competitions.

Moving up to a higher level means a higher level of English skills is needed. In High School, the English subject is called Communication Arts English. In this time, we must use the language in all forms of communication. We had essay writing, journalism, theater plays, interviews, debates, and more.

English education never stops in high school. Since I majored in Electrical Engineering, I learned technical terminologies. Technical English is crucial in engineering researches because technical writing must be concise but comprehensive.

Currently, there are some changes in the education curriculum. However, English is still a big part of the education system. Teachers still facilitate the lessons in the same approach, although the mother tongue is now part of the curriculum. Because of the introduction of the mother tongue or Filipino language in most subjects, my son compels himself to memorize Filipino vocabulary.

My son is now 14 years old.  When he turned eight months, he could understand the sounds of English or phonics. It is essential for toddlers because it helps them in word recognition.

Growing up, he watched educational English TV programs for kids. Watching YouTube also enhanced his listening, choice of words, speaking, and pronunciation.

He told me that role-playing in video games like going through adventure maps, collaborating, and playing with other foreign-gamer friends polished his skills more.

In conclusion, establishing language learning early in life is fun and effortless. Total immersion in English surroundings significantly improves the skills. It is how the majority of Filipinos acquire English skills.
