切ない気持ちで過ごしております(^^;
Hi everyone! For this entry, I would like to talk about animal welfare. This is the general well-being of an animal, which is based upon a number of factors including shelter, enrichment, safety, and overall treatment and care. Here in the Philippines, we have the Animal Welfare Act under Republic Act 10631, which contains basic animal rights and corresponding punishments for animal cruelty. Despite its existence for almost seven years, with the original republic act for animal welfare existing for about 22 years prior, it is sad that neglect and abuse are still very common scenarios in our country. I think it’s safe to say that the majority of Filipinos love dogs, but there is little action from the government to back up the private sector in pursuing animal abuse cases, making violators very complacent. I envy animal laws abroad, where an animal can even be taken away from abusive families and given to a proper home. I hope that welfare laws in Japan are strict. I am always happy to see my students with senior dogs – thus goes to show how much love and effort their families have put into their furry friend.
Beyond the laws, however, I would like to talk specifically about dogs, and how they have very specific feelings, much like we do! A study has shown that at maturity, a dog’s brain operates similarly to that of a child at 2 to 2.5 years of age. I find this very amusing because my nephew is turning 2 very soon, and at this age, he has so many funny behaviors, is learning rapidly, and is VERY expressive with his emotions. In many ways, I think he and my dogs may understand one another more easily at this stage. Anyway, I have recently started other work which has taken quite a lot of my time away from home, and I have come to feel how much my dogs have been missing me. The older one, who is normally aloof, now curls up on my lap even though she is terribly heavy. She has also become quieter and is sometimes slow when eating her food, from lack of mental stimulation. My younger dog goes crazy when I get home, and has become overly affectionate. Both of them seem to want much more attention, and sometimes even quarrel a bit. The worst part is that they have very hopeful looks on their faces as they wag their tails and watch me gather my things. I see their tails stop at the same time when I close the door to leave.
It’s not a simple and easy thing to have a dog! I desperately wanted one during my childhood, but now, as an adult with a better understanding of dog psychology and welfare, I am sad knowing that I am not doing enough to keep them happy. I truly hope that the threat of the virus starts to wane in my city, so that I can build up a walking regimen for their exercise and mental stimulation, which are very important for their health. I’ve heard that Japan is now in summer break. It’s a good time for bonding with one another and resting a bit before school starts again. I hope that you can include your dogs in your day to day activities and give them a lot of love and attention. They will appreciate and truly enjoy your time together more than you know.
という反応でした(^^;
