In the Philippines, developing good communication skills in English is very important because it can be the bridge to achieve our educational and career goals. It improves and excels one’s chance of landing their dream jobs. It also helps us communicate broaden our connection and networking.

However, learning English as a second language can be a challenging task especially at a young age. But as soon as we get used to it, every effort and time we spend studying the language will definitely be worth it. Allow me share some practical tips on how to learn English effectively.

First, it is important to study useful phrases by understanding the specific situation or purpose wherein it may apply. I have noticed that it is important to study phrases not words. Merely memorizing words without context would not make sense.
When studying English, memorizing without understanding is not advisable. Instead, we should study whole important phrases. Familiarizing the meaning of words is much easier if we know what they mean and how they are used in a sentence.

Secondly, listening to relevant audio is very effective for me. Reading textbooks can can also be helpful, but we must not rely solely on them. Textbooks are great for teaching about grammar and vocabulary, but they may not be too much of a help when it comes to carrying out a conversation. If we want to learn how to speak English, learn by listening and not merely by reading. We can also practice some basic conversations with a friend or fellow English language learner. By speaking and listening more, we will be able to learn useful vocabulary and grammar without even realizing or memorising them.

Finally, when it comes to learning any language, it should always be all about quality over quantity. Instead of learning dozens of new words in a short time, we should focus on learning one word and repeating it several of time. This prevents us from suffering from information overload. In addition, this strategy would allow us to place the meaning of words and phrases in our mind so that we would not forget about them easily.

Given these foregoing tips and useful techniques, my wife and I are committed to teach English to our one year old son at an early age. We plan to start off by exposing him to useful phrases until he becomes familiarize with the language. Hope these tips are helpful in your English language learning endeavor.
