【講師コラム】アンソニー講師No.6～Video Games as Useful Tool for Studying ESL in Englishbuds～

Growing up, I have always been fond of playing many different kinds of video games. It had been a sort of diversion for me from a busy day at school. Even until now that I am already working as a lawyer, playing video games remains to be my stress reliever after a long day at the office.

What makes Englishbuds unique as an ESL school is that it allows both teachers and students who share a common interest to have a meaningful English conversation by doing what they like most. Since I am into playing various kinds of video games, I am thankful that Englishbuds gave me the opportunity to meet students who are also interested in games.

Both the student and the teacher in Englishbuds have fun in class while learning at the same time. Video games that students really like can be used to introduce new vocabulary, reinforce a language point, practice words or language structures, teach or practice grammar and improve core skills while allowing the student to simply enjoy the session. These types of video game lessons and group sessions re-energize the class and motivates the students to speak up their mind. I believe that Using games and fun activities in class is an important part of teaching ESL. Playing games is a fun way to help students make connections between words and grammar. These connections quicken the process of building language skills. These ESL games can definitely help ESL learners improve their language ability. Playing games in class also helps to focus attention, improve interaction, increase energy levels and build confidence. Furthermore, shy or quiet students begin to open up and speak English when playing games in class. It surely is a useful tool in improving the students’ English language ability here in Englishbuds.
