The Filipino Ways

Filipino customs came from the combination of cultural influences of Spanish, American, and other cultures that have shaped the unique fabric of Filipino society. These customs reflect a strong sense of community, hospitality, family values, and religious devotion.

One of the most common customs in the Philippines is “pakikisama,” which emphasizes the importance of maintaining good relationships with other people. This cultural trait empowers Filipinos to be cooperative, accommodating, and considerate towards others, showing a strong social interaction and engagement within communities.

Filipinos also exhibit a family oriented trait. The “Utang na loob,” or debt of gratitude, underscores the obligation to repay kindness and support received from family members or others. This principle emphasizes the reciprocal nature of relationships and encourages strong familial ties and sense of responsibility.

Hospitality, known as “hospitalidad,” is another integral part of Filipino customs. Filipinos are renowned for their warm and welcoming nature, often exemplified by the tradition of offering food and shelter to visitors, even to strangers, as a gesture of generosity and goodwill.

Moreover, the Filipino concept of “hiya” encompasses a sense of shame or modesty, guiding individuals to act with propriety and consideration for others’ feelings. It influences behaviors and interactions, emphasizing the importance of humility, respect, and sensitivity in social settings.

Despite the evolving modern landscape, these customs are being done and passed from generation to generation to preserve the country’s rich cultural heritage and to establish strong sense of identity and community among Filipinos. As the Philippines continues to progress, these customs serve as a reminder of the values that bind communities together and form an integral part of Filipino life and identity.
