【講師コラム】アダム講師No.19～The Art of Teaching～

Learning the good things we have learned from adults and sharing them with younger ones are already parts of our daily lives. Teachers have their unique styles of teaching for students who have different ways of learning the lessons like the parents to their children. My teaching style can be done by anyone once they dedicate themselves to make the students learn.

First, a teacher should be calm and be their self in a way that he or she will sound natural in
having a conversation with the students. Introducing yourself as a teacher and making the
students share about themselves makes the learning environment light. This is also a way of
getting the students’ attention and trust.

Second, questioning students by asking them HOTS questions. HOTS is short for Higher-Order
Thinking Skills. Asking students some guide questions will help them to come up with the
correct or even more sensible answers. If the question are quite a challenge for them, simplify
even more it for their better understanding.

Third, the teachers shall consider if the students have the learning foundation on certain topics or lessons. Once they have, the teacher shall focus on the unfamiliar things for the students which will help them to expedite the learning. We may revisit the previous lessons for mastery.

Fourth, having a sense of humor is also important. The teacher shall know the best timing of
sharing something funny that will make the students more engaged with the lesson. It is also
one way on making the learning experience fun. Facing the students with an authentic smile is
very important.

Fifth, most students are visual learners nowadays. Showing photos and videos that are related
to the lesson will be highly effective and appreciated by them. It will help to boost learning.
Most importantly, have a good classroom management. The lesson content will not be good if the students are not focused on what they are going to learn. Having good discipline and
manners are also part. Therefore, the teacher shall not ignore if the students need to be
corrected.

I am not boasting these teaching styles because I have learned these from other teachers and
my superiors in the education industry. Everyone can do these. Most teachers have their own
more creative ways on doing these styles.

We, teachers, have to remember that our students are the living evidence of how effective our
teaching styles are. If the students are not improving, then the teacher shall try another teaching style that is suitable for them. Knowing the students first is very significant. If we know our students, we can figure out how to teach them.
The good and appropriate teaching styles shall be continued in the next or future generations.
