【講師コラム】エセル講師No.23～ Encouraging Teachers to Reveal Hidden Talents Beyond Teaching～

Teachers are among the most influential people in everyone’s lives. They are tools for shaping our personalities. As a result, it is impossible to deny that teachers have an impact on some of their students’ characteristics. However, we must remember that these characteristics are shaped by more than just the fundamental teachings in school textbooks. Many of these stem from the students’ perceptions of their teachers’ unique talents. So, they should be encouraged to discover and pursue their hidden talents and passions. 

This journey relies significantly on the support of friends, family, and colleagues. They provide the necessary encouragement to bring these hidden talents to light. One good example is when I was in elementary school, my science teacher inspired me to play a traditional Philippine string instrument called Banduria. I saw him play that instrument at the school’s final event. I never thought he could play so well. If the school principal hadn’t encouraged and supported those teachers, I wouldn’t have learned and discovered my hidden talent either.

Teachers profoundly inspire their students when they share their talents. They take on a role as role models, demonstrating that growth and learning could also happen far outside of the classroom.

I must agree that a degree or a teaching job doesn’t mean pursuing personal development is over. It’s an ongoing process of self-improvement and discovery. Teachers who discover their inner gifts improve the lives of those around them and also make learning more enjoyable for themselves. So, let us continue to encourage each other.
