【講師コラム】マリア講師No.5～ Improve your English Language Proficiency through Group Reading ～

For ESL students, it is important to practice English skills in authentic environments, and group lesson is one of them. Group activities allow students to develop their language skills by interacting with other ESL students and learning from them. And as you know, Englishbuds offers various group lessons which are engaging and interactive.

At Raz-Kids reading class, we provide children with enjoyable reading experience and make students love reading. We help young learners become confident readers on their own. Students are also given the opportunity to share their views about the world around them, which makes the class very interactive. They get involved in a conversation with others where they can freely express their thoughts about the book that they read. Students can also engage in vocabulary practice while having a great time. One of the nicest things about reading class that students look forward to the most are the fun activities that we do like arts and crafts, quiz bee, games, friendly competitions, and many more!

For Magic Tree House, just like Raz-Kids, kids can explore endless topics and interests. Young readers can travel throughout history while stirring their imaginations without leaving the comfort of home. It is also best for young readers beginning their journey into the world of chapter books. Students are also given activities which are effective for getting students to talk to each other and putting their English skills to good use. Overall, I believe that reading group lessons do not only focus on improving students’ reading skills, but also enrich students’ overall English skills.

In the future, it would also be great to conduct a “Reader’s Theatre”. In reader’s theatre, students perform by reading scripts created from grade-level books or stories, and parts are divided among the readers beforehand. It is a strategy that combines reading practice and performing. It is one of the best ways to develop English fluency. Fluency, which is the ability to read with proper speed, accuracy and expression. All these, while having fun in their creative and wacky costumes! It is like performing in a theatre but you don’t need to memorize your script! So, join us in these reading group lessons and let’s all enjoy!
