【講師コラム】ローマー講師No.3～ENHANCE YOUR ENGLISH LANGUAGE SKILS WITHOUT EVEN REALIZING IT～

Learning the English language is not easy. A lot of adults find it boresome to give time in learning the language. If this is true to grown-up people, just imagine how more boresome can this be for kids. And as teachers, we must find a way to make learning English interesting to them. With this, the teachers recognize that this can be done so by adopting a game-based learning. We know from our common experience that kids naturally love playing. So why not do both at the same time? Why not make play time an occasion for kids to learn the English language? Here at Englishbuds, I handle three fun group lessons where students can improve their English skills without them even realizing it: Pokémon UNITE, Minecraft, and Show and Tell.

Pokémon UNITE is a multiplayer online battle arena video game. This is played by team composed of five players. The goal is to take down an opposing team in a strategic battle. Playing this, the students build strong bond with their teammates. They develop some strategies that would guarantee them an advantage against the opposing team. Teamwork is very crucial! And it is impossible to have teamwork without communication. So, the kids communicate with one another by utilizing the English language.

Minecraft is known worldwide to be a game where creativity and imagination are cultivated. This game makes the players like real engineers of their own designs. This game makes them build infrastructure of any kind according to their creativity. This game is truly helpful for kids. Given that it gives them enjoyment, the kids also learn how to be creative and imaginative. And these traits are essential too in English language.

Show and Tell method allows the kids to speak what is on their mind using the English language. This segment makes kids present something and explain its personal relevance to their life such as their favorite toys. Through this segment, the kids will be used to find words and construct grammars that would express what they want to tell. The end is to make speaking English natural to them. Indeed, this has been a very effective to master the language.

In the future, it would also be fun to have a Poster Making Contest wherein students can bring out their creative expression while expressing their knowledge and awareness about a certain theme, topic, or issue. Surely, adopting this kind of group lesson creates new atmosphere for kids and will set a positive attitude for kids in improving their English skills. Thank you for always supporting Englishbuds!
