【講師コラム】ローマー講師No.11～Simbang Gabi: A Filipino Christmas Tradition～

In Filipino homes, there’s a special tradition close to our hearts: “Simbang Gabi.” Simbang Gabi means “Night Mass,” and it’s about going to nine early morning Masses before Christmas, starting on December 16 and ending on Christmas Eve. This tradition blends our Catholic faith with our indigenous culture, making it unique.

During Simbang Gabi, people wake up early, like 3 or 4 in the morning, to go to Mass. It’s a way to begin each day with prayer and reflection. Many people believe it brings blessings and makes our wishes come true if we attend all nine days.

Many Filipinos including me look forward to attending Simbang Gabi. As a child, I was always excited to these early mornings with my family, because it wasn’t just about religion; it was about family and community. It creates the feeling of togetherness. Families, friends, and neighbors often go to Mass together, walking to the church in the dark. It’s warm and united as we gather, surrounded by the breeze and the soft glow of traditional Filipino Christmas lanterns called parol. After Mass, we share breakfast, often featuring traditional Filipino holiday treats like bibingka (rice cake) and puto bumbong (purple rice cake).

Simbang Gabi is more than just a religious tradition; it’s a cultural experience that deeply touches Filipinos. It reflects our strength, sense of community, and never-ending hope, setting the stage for the joyful Christmas season. It’s also a beautiful mix of culture and faith that defines our Filipino identity.

I still eagerly look forward to Simbang Gabi every year. While I may not attend Simbang Gabi every year now, the memories of those early mornings with my family and friends remain a treasure in my heart, reminding me of the enduring values that define our Filipino identity and the joy that comes with being together.
